On this edition of HBCU Corner, Nolan Smith, Head Coach of the Tennessee State Tigers men’s basketball program and a Prince George’s County, Maryland (DMV) legend, joins Urban Sports Scene to break down Tennessee State’s historic 2025-26 season.
The Tigers captured the Ohio Valley Conference (OVC) regular-season championship—their first since 1995—and finished with the most conference wins in program history. Under Smith’s leadership, Tennessee State has re-established itself as a serious contender in the OVC and on the national HBCU basketball stage, positioning the program for a potential March Madness run.
A former Duke national champion and longtime NBA assistant coach, Smith brought high-level experience back to the HBCU ranks when he accepted the Tennessee State job. He discusses how his DMV basketball roots shaped his competitive mindset, leadership style, and recruiting philosophy, as well as how he built a championship culture in Nashville.
We also discuss:
• Tennessee State’s path to winning the OVC regular-season title
• The significance of this championship for the program and HBCU basketball
• Preparing for the OVC Men’s Basketball Tournament
• Building momentum toward March Madness
• His favorite HBCU memories and the debate over the best homecoming
This is a powerful conversation about leadership, legacy, and elevating HBCU basketball on a national level.
