The Washington Commanders’ initial 53-man roster is officially set for the 2026 NFL season, but the roster-building process is far from finished.

Felix Trammell, Washington Commanders reporter for Fox Sports Radio 96.9 FM & 1340 AM in Hopewell, Virginia, joins Wole on the Urban Sports Scene podcast to break down Washington’s final roster decisions, surprising cuts, injury situations and the biggest questions remaining before Week 1.

The Commanders released a long list of players during final cuts, including Sam Hartman, Robert Henry Jr., Van Jefferson, Fabian Moreau, Shy Tuttle, Jaden Bradley, Antonio Hamilton Sr. and Nicholas Petit-Frere. Washington also placed Trey Amos and Jeremy McNichols on injured reserve with designations to return, while Deatrich Wise Jr. was placed on the Reserve/PUP list.

There are plenty of intriguing decisions on the initial roster. Washington kept three quarterbacks, with rookie Athan Kaliakmanis joining Jayden Daniels and Marcus Mariota. The Commanders also kept seven wide receivers, including Terry McLaurin, Stefon Diggs, Antonio Williams, Luke McCaffrey, Jaylin Lane, Treylon Burks and Dyami Brown. Rookie center Matt Gulbin made the team, while undrafted guard Tanoa Togiai was another notable inclusion.

The Fabian Moreau and Shy Tuttle releases may ultimately be procedural moves. NOTUS reported that both could potentially return after Washington makes additional injured-reserve transactions, while Moreau has also been linked to a possible return following Trey Amos’ move to IR.

Another major storyline is Washington’s depth. The initial roster includes just three active cornerbacks, while the offensive line could still use another center or interior option. That makes the waiver wire and post-cut free-agent market important as the Commanders continue preparing for Week 1.
