The Washington Commanders opened the 2026 NFL season with a heartbreaking 24-22 road loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, nearly completing a late comeback before falling just short in Week 1.
Felix Trammell, Washington Commanders reporter for Fox Sports Radio 96.9 FM & 1340 AM in Hopewell, Virginia, joins Wole to break down everything that happened in Commanders vs. Eagles, including Jayden Daniels’ return to regular-season action, Washington’s improved defense, the rookie performances that stood out and the mistakes that ultimately cost the Commanders a chance to leave Philadelphia 1-0.
The Commanders’ offense was inconsistent early, managing only 50 yards on seven non-scoring drives, but showed flashes as the game progressed. Washington rushed for 132 yards, with Jacory Croskey-Merritt producing 63 yards on 16 carries, while Daniels helped lead a fourth-quarter push that gave Washington an opportunity to tie the game late.
🔥 Wole and Felix discuss:
What went wrong in the Commanders’ 24-22 loss
Jayden Daniels’ first regular-season game in 11 months
Why Washington’s offense started slowly
The Commanders’ late fourth-quarter comeback attempt
Jacory Croskey-Merritt and Washington’s running game
How the offensive line performed against Philadelphia’s defensive front
The biggest positives from Daronte Jones’ new-look defense
Washington recording three sacks against Jalen Hurts
Why a handful of explosive Eagles plays proved costly
Sonny Styles making an immediate impact in his NFL debut
Antonio Williams emerging as Washington’s leading receiving threat
What the Commanders must clean up before
Week 2 Washington’s defense gave Philadelphia problems for much of the game.
The Commanders recorded three sacks, limited Saquon Barkley to 83 rushing yards on 15 carries, and prevented him from taking over the game the way he has in past matchups.
However, explosive plays hurt Washington at critical moments and helped Philadelphia create scoring opportunities.
There were also encouraging performances from Washington’s rookie class. Sonny Styles recorded his first NFL sack and two tackles for loss against Barkley, while Antonio Williams caught all four of his targets for 64 yards and a touchdown, making several important plays during Washington’s comeback attempt.
The result drops Washington to 0-1, but the Commanders showed they can compete with one of the NFC’s top teams. Now the focus turns to cleaning up explosive-play breakdowns, finding more consistency on offense and carrying the positives into Week 2.
💬 Commanders fans: What was the biggest reason Washington lost—slow offensive start, explosive plays allowed on defense, or something else? And what encouraged you most from Week 1?
